Do you have a natural ability inmathematics, the universal language of engineering? Are you interested in understanding how to implement knowledge and technology in a creative and ethical manner for long- termsustainability? If so, you should study Mechanical and Sustainability Engineering. Similarly tomost engineering courses, ability inmathematics is a key requirement alongside an interest in problemsolving, how things work and an eye for detail.  Additional Requirements In addition to the general entry requirements for admission to the University (see pages 174), the following entry requirements apply: minimum of H4 inMathematics or H4 in Applied Mathematics withH5 inMathematics.  Understanding: Mechanical and Sustainability Engineering Our planet is facing enormous challenges that demand urgent action, innovation and specialised skills. Engineers have an important role to play in developing solutions that will helpmake our world more sustainable. Complex challenges require engineers who understand the environmental impact of our engineering activities, and can use tools andmethods to design and implement technologies tomitigate our environmental impact. The BEng inMechanical and Sustainability Engineeringwill prepare youwith the knowledge and competence tomeet the changingworld of sustainability and the growing global challenges of transitioning to zero carbon, environmentally sound, reliable, affordable and sustainable energy systems. Graduates will be equipped with a strong foundation inmechanical engineering andwill be prepared tomeet current and future global challenges of sustainability and decarbonisation. While this course offers you the opportunity to specialise in sustainability, it also provides rigorous engineering training andwill be eligible for accreditation by Engineers Ireland. It also encompasses extensive learning around climate and sustainability issues andmany of the projects will look to tackle issues related to theUNSustainableDevelopment Goals. This course has been carefully planned to ensure it produces industry-ready graduates who are prepared to tackle some of the huge challenges thrown up by climate change, while also being mindful of the environmental impact of any engineeringwork they do. Industry partners will also be involved throughout. They play an active role in creating and developing the coursematerial and will join inworkshops, challenge-based learning and other aspects of the course. Course Structure This course brings together the disciplines of mechanical engineering and electronic engineering over the 4 years. The course has 8 academic streams addressing a particular aspect ofMechatronic Engineering. These streams are: − Mathematics, DataAnalytics andModelling − Thermofluid Sciences  − Sustainable SystemDesign and Integration − Renewable, Sustainable Systems andDecarbonisation Energy, Water and ResourceManagement − EngineeringManagement, Economy and Sustainable Society The course places a strong emphasis on both academic performances in examinations and continuous assessment throughout the 4 years. Students have the option to undertake an integratedMasters fromYear 3, subject to achieving aH2.2 or higher in Years 1 and 2.
