Do youwant to knowhow science seeks to answer the big question? Are you competent inmathematics and do you have a logical mind? Then Physics General Entrymay be the course for you. Additional Requirements In addition to the general entry requirements for admission to the University (see page 174), the following entry requirements apply: minimumof O3 or H6 inMathematics PLUSminimum of O3 or H5 in one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics with Chemistry, Applied Mathematics or Computer Science. Understanding: Physics General Entry Physics is themost fundamental science. It explains themysteries of the universe and has fueledmany of the scientific and technological developments that we take for granted. Physicists also pioneered modern technologies as diverse as the Internet, nuclear power andMRI scanners. Today physicists continue to generate new knowledge about our world and lead innovation in yet-to-be exploited realms such as quantum information and communications technology, nano- systems design, ultrafast molecular switching and terahertzmedical imaging. Upon successful completion of Physics General Entry Year 1, youwill enter into Year 2 of 1 of the following: − BSc in Physics withDataAnalytics − BSc in Applied Physics − BSc in Physics with Astronomy − BSc in Physics with Biomedical Sciences Youwill normally be accepted into the course of your choice. Course Structure Physics General Entry provides you with the opportunity to gain a solid foundation in physics, mathematics, laboratory and IT skills before progressing to your chosen course. Your chosen coursewill combine lectures, tutorials and stimulating laboratory work and projects with fundamental physics concepts and exciting, real-life technological skills and applications. The basic foundations of physics will be laid in Years 1 and 2, while in Years 3 and 4, you will choose to studymore specialist topics. Your period of industrial work placement (INTRA) in Year 3 of your chosen course ensures that you gain valuable paidwork experience and for thosewhowish to pursue a research career, youwill have the option of spending your placement working in one of our research groups. Your Year 4 project is a real highlight which you conduct in our world class laboratories andwhere youwill experience the excitement and personal achievement associatedwith scientific research. On several occasions, final-year physics students have received national and international awards from theUndergraduate Awards, the Institute of Physics and the International Society of Automation on the basis of their project work. During your chosen course, youwill be encouraged to apply for scientific internship schemes, including visiting fellowships in organisations such as the EuropeanOrganisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the European Space Agency (ESA).
