GardaVetting Garda vetting has been introduced for students who have unsupervised access to children and vulnerable adults as part of their studies at DCU. Youmust successfully pass theGarda vetting process in order to complete the process of registration. Understanding: BEdHome Economics andTechnology – Post Primary Education The Bachelor of Education inHome Economics and Technology will be delivered through an innovative partnership across two IrishUniversities, Dublin City University (DCU) and Technological University of the Shannon (TUS). Youwill undertake Years 1 and 2 of study at the TUSAthlone campus, and Years 3 and 4 at theDCU Institute of Education, inDublin. This Post-Primary Teacher Education course is a ‘concurrent’ teacher education course - meaning that the academic and professional formation of the teacher is integrated in all 4 years. Youwill be qualified to teachHome Economics and Technology subjects in post-primary schools. The unique approach taken in this coursewill enable you to become a confident and innovative home economics and technology teacher. Course Structure Across the 4 years of this course, you will gradually develop the knowledge, skills and competencies to become a passionate teacher and advocate for theHome Economics and Technology subjects. In Years 1 and 2, youwill develop deep knowledge of andmastery of culinary, textiles and technology design skills. In Years 3 and 4, the focus will be on enhancing your understanding of teaching and learning, and honing your skills and practice as a teacher through sustained engagement in post-primary school settings. Throughout the delivery of this course, youwill experience a learner-centred, supportive, open, dynamic and practical approach to the study of education. Foundational and Professional Studies in Education Over the 4 years of the course, youwill develop your professional knowledge and practice for teaching theHome Economics and Technology subjects. The foundation and professional studiesmodules focus on developing your knowledge and understanding of philosophy, sociology, psychology, and history of education, as well as your competence in designing, delivering and assessing quality teaching and learning experiences in home economics and technology-related subjects at both junior and senior cycle levels. Home Economics andTechnology The study of Home Economics and Technology education is exciting, engaging, and challenging. Youwill learnways in which individuals and familiesmanage their resources tomeet physical, emotional, intellectual, social and economic needs, and develop competencies in culinary arts and textiles. Youwill also learn the principles of design thinking and designerly practices, and innovation in technology design. Within the Circular Home Enterprisemodule in the final year, you will advance your theoretical knowledge and practical application of food studies, consumer studies, and technology design through an entrepreneurial project that examines sustainability, creativity and inclusion in home and community settings. Professional Placement One of themost exciting and rewarding elements of the course is our hands-on approach to professional placement. Across the 4 year course, youwill be prepared for teaching practice in a range of learning environments and contexts, through engagement inmicro-teaching, peer-teaching, team-teaching and observation of practice in post-primary school settings. In Years 3 and 4, the professional placement component of this coursewill enable you to engage in direct teaching of post-primary learners, and also learn about and get involved in activities and initiatives with thewider school community outside of classroom teaching.
