100 WhyDCU? − Youwill be equippedwith the skills to create innovative solutions for various industries’ manufacturing needs − DCU is home toworld-class engineering academics, and state-of-the-art lecture theatres, workshops and labs − The Faculty of Engineering and Computing educates a diverse student community, has strong industry links and a range of exciting scholarship opportunities − 6month paidwork placement (INTRA) in Year 3 − Option to complete an additional year of study and graduate in Year 5with aMasters of Engineering − Internationally recognised qualification which enables graduates towork as professional engineers in the EU, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, NewZealand, Singapore, South Africa, theUK and theUSA About You Can you imagine designing and building a better electric vehicle, jet engine or wind turbine?Maybe you have figured out away to improve inhalers or door handles. Do you have a natural ability inmathematics, the universal language of engineering? If you are fascinated by how things work and aremade, enjoy getting caught up in the details, and thrive as part of a team, chooseMechanical andManufacturing Engineering. Additional Requirements In addition to the general entry requirements for admission to the University (see page 174), the following entry requirements apply: minimum of H4 inMathematics or H4 in Applied Mathematics withH5 inMathematics. Understanding: Mechanical andManufacturing Engineering Mechanical andManufacturing Engineering go hand in hand, but each is quite distinct. Mechanical Engineering is about the efficient use of energy for the design and function of all types of mechanisms. Mechanical Engineers design everything fromdoor locks to space shuttles. If it moves, youwill find mechanical engineering at the heart of its design. There are countless growth sectors for engineers in this area. Manufacturing Engineering, on the other hand, focuses on the development and improvement of manufacturing processes and systems. As amechanical andmanufacturing engineer, youmight develop advanced materials for hypersonic space travel, design automatic control systems, or work withmedical professionals to investigate the human body and design instruments for medicine. Youmight work for a leading automotive company, optimising designs and assembly line processes. Or you might work with a leading healthcare provider to create assistive robots that have the potential to provide support for a range of care-related tasks such as physical and social assistance. Our students take things apart, figure out how they work, how to fix or improve them, and then put themback together again. Youwill use 3Dprinters and other advanced tools inDCU’s state-of-the-art labs, while also absorbing engineering theory. Youwill also gain extensive skills and knowledge in engineeringmechanics, computer simulation and analysis, design and manufacture, and project management. With the 2 disciplines of mechanical andmanufacturing engineering, this course offers an impressive background in engineering, which opens the door tomany exciting career opportunities. It enables you to apply themost sophisticated computer tools tomeet the traditional challenges of mechanical andmanufacturing engineering. Course Structure The 4 year BEng course has 4 academic themes, with each stream addressing a particular aspect of mechanical andmanufacturing engineering. These streams are: − Fundamental Skills -Mathematics, Computing, DataAnalytics, Simulation − EngineeringMechanics -Machines, Materials, Thermofluids, Dynamics andControl − Design andManufacture - Product Design, Manufacturing Processes and Systems, Lean and Six Sigma − Professional - ProjectManagement, Professional Development, Work Placement, Ethics An averagemark over 50% in Years 1 and 2 gives you the option to transfer to the integrated 5 yearMasters. The extra modules in Year 5 allows you a choice to graduatewith aMajor in Simulation DrivenDesign or in Sustainable Systems and Energy. Students graduating from the integratedMasters of Engineering will simultaneously receive their BEng qualification. The course places a strong emphasis on both academic performances in examinations and continuous assessment throughout the 5 years. INTRAWork Placement In Year 3, youwill undertake a paidwork placement (INTRA) for 6-10months (10 months for integratedMEng students). This is usually with a business in Ireland but there are also opportunities towork abroad. For more information, please visit dcu.ie/intra.
