36 12. Simulation of Laterally Coupled Laser Diodes Laser diodes are semiconductor devices designed to emit coherent, monochromatic radiation, usually for transmitting encoded signals. This project analyses InGaAsP Fabry-Pérot cavities, where spectral efficiencies can be improved via lateral coupling. The effects of coupling Fabry-Pérot lasers are modelled inMATLAB, following coupledmode theory and the corresponding rate equations. Modifying the lengths of coupled lasers has a direct relationship with frequency spacing from their resonant frequency, leading to unique interference patterns that improve spectral performance. The features under analysis are the bandwidth, laser linewidth, andmonochromaticity resulting from coupling effects. By designing this simulation model, the behaviour of coupled Fabry-Pérot lasers can be investigated.
